5G Use Cases

octubre 29, 2020 - Martin Morgan

Martin Morgan, VP Marketing, talks about the endless possibilities and opportunities that 5G brings

Over the last three weeks the marketing team at Openet has been busy compiling the 2020 edition of our 101 use cases white paper.  The idea behind this document is to highlight what we think are cool use cases that can be enabled or contributed to by charging, policy and data management. We’ve been producing this document for the last four years and for the first year we ran out of use case when we hit 75. The next two years we upped the number to 101 but it was tough going to find that number of use cases for 3G and 4G services.

This year we’ve added a couple of sections in on 5G. One for consumer and one for enterprise. Considering 5G was only launched in Korea in April 2019, the range of use cases and 5G offers provided by service providers is impressive. Immersive entertainment and gaming are being pushed heavily and service providers are now providing VR headsets. It used to be that the only devices customers could get from their service providers were phones and tablets, now service providers are selling a range of 5G enabled devices from smart home devices to VR headsets.

For enterprise 5G use cases, we’ve included 15 in the white paper. We could have written another 100. Looking at some of the 5G trials that are being carried out, the range of use cases is amazing. Smart hospitals using network slicing to serve different applications with differing criticality are currently being trialled in Spain. Autonomous ferries are being trialled in Germany and smart road and infrastructure projects are under trial in the UK. Not to mention the on-going work building 5G powered smart factories by some of the main manufacturing companies in the world. What is interesting about many 5G enterprise projects is the partnership focus that is enabling these use cases. It’s not just about the service provider providing connectivity. It’s about the service providers working with industrial companies, with local governments and with academia to develop use cases. This is because in many cases, the network is an essential element in the use case and not just a provider of ‘best effort’ connectivity.

Many 5G use cases will be enabled by the roll out of standalone 5G networks, and this is happening quicker than many people think. According to Omdia’s 5G World 2020 Global Insights Survey 47% of global CSPs plan to have a standalone 5G network by end of 2022. The breakdown of this is 13% by end 2020, 15% by end 2021 and 19% by end 2022. Standalone 5G networks will accelerate the development out of 5G use cases. Many of the most successful use cases probably won’t have even been thought about yet, and the key will be the ability of the service providers to be able to react quickly to launch, manage and monetise new use cases when they come up.

As well as the 26 use cases on 5G enterprise and consumer, there’s also another 75 use cases that cover 4G. The Openet marketing team have done an amazing job pulling the 101 Use Cases white paper together in just three weeks. It’s well worth a read.
