101 Use Cases for 4G and 5G
2022 Edition
In this chapter, we look at the role of NEF (Network Exposure Function) in the 5G core and how this addition to the network will open up new revenue streams. 5G presents the opportunity for service providers to reimagine the value they can deliver beyond commoditised connectivity alone. By enabling partners to engage with the network directly and interface with the functional features, 5G unlocks new ways for service providers to make the network profitable.
Trusted partners will be able to interact with 5G features, allowing them to avail of the network’s agility more directly in the trialing and delivery of new services. The network will boast many faces for the various types of partners interacting with it. This is a market yet to establish itself, but promises to be a complete reimagining of how networks serve clients so is one to watch.
7.1 Dynamic QoS (Quality of Service) Management for Devices
Exposed capabilities can be circumstance- or location dependent. For example, drones flying at a particular location can automatically switch from standard to high-definition cameras when required. Another example is a drone managing routine tasks (such as container counting) in a port facility but needing to switch on ultra high-definition cameras for crane inspection on an occasional basis or in the event of crane failure. Several equipment providers and port facilities are testing such uses already including The Port of Rotterdam.
Such occasional, higher-level tasks can be time-based or unpredictable circumstance based. Given that high grade QoS profiles might only occasionally be needed, it may need to be ensured that costs are controlled by the just-in-time request and allocation of such costly network resources. The same may apply to VR gaming where a standard definition may need intermittent upgrading to 8K definition and 120 frames per second for certain phases of a game.
